QLD Gov attempts to reduce electricity hikes for 12 months

Reduce rising power bills

The Queensland Government has announced it will freeze local residential electricity hikes for the next financial year, but power bills will still increase due to the carbon tax. The 12 month initiative commencing next financial year is likely to cost QLD Tax payers $60 million, but is part of the governments commitment to help lower the cost of living for families.

Queensland still offers Australia's most generous feed-in tariff for solar, making the switch to solar power very attractive. Residents & Businesses can reduce or completely eliminate their power bills by producing their own electricity.

Good feeling - a story from one of our own

Natania Clarke in the Brisbane Showroom

In February this year, Natania joined the Solar Shop Australia team in Brisbane. Not knowing much about solar prior to joining the team, she instantly began to feel good about working for a company with a clear vision of improving the environmental future of Australia through the delivery of solar power.

Natania said that working with a dedicated team, whose passion for sustainability was contagious, she found herself wanting to go one step further and install a solar power system on her own home.

“The initial thought of installing a personalized mini power station on my roof seemed financially ‘out of my reach’,” Natania said.

“Ben Hinwood, one of our Renewable Energy Advisors, talked me through the benefits of purchasing a system with Sunworks, Solar Shop’s finance package. And now having that knowledge there was no excuses left, I quickly signed up for a system,” she said.

When asked about her decision to go Solar Natania said “My home is a sanctuary that I should feel good about.  Every ‘flick of the switch’ is a constant reminder that the energy created is from a safe and environmentally friendly resource, an incredibly empowering feeling!”

Queensland community groups have access to solar power grant

The QLD Government established the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) to provide funding to community groups from the taxes recieved through lotteries, wagering, keno and gaming machines. The GCBF distributes these funds to community projects on a quarterly basis to ensure the whole state benefits.

Community groups can apply for a grant under this fund to support the purchase and installation of a 1.5kw solar PV system. One off grants of up to $35,000 are allocated to approved organisations at four annual funding rounds. If an application is not successful in the first funding round, it is automatically considered in the next funding round.

The next funding round has opened as of 1 June 2010.

While the full criteria is yet to be known, to apply for the grant you’ll need to meet the following requirements:

  • Located in Queensland
  • Have an ABN
  • Maintain valid bank account
  • Incorporated, community based, not-for-profit
  • Unincorporated, community based, not-for-profit, but with an eligible incorporated sponsor that will accept legal and financial responsibility for the grant, or
  • A ‘Minister approved’ organisation type

Solar Shop Australia would recommend that any community groups in Queensland to visit the Government Website for more information.
