Government Grants

Some government grants are national and others are state based.

At The Solar Shop, we make it easy for you. We do all the paperwork for you and whenever possible, take the grant amount off your invoice so you only need to pay the after rebate amount.

Of course, each grant has an eligibility criteria to watch out for so give us a call if you have any questions.

Below are the most common grants we deal with:

solar electricity panel rebate (national)
renewable energy certificates (national)
remote power rebate (WA)
grid connect rebate for fringe of grid (WA)
solar hot water rebate (SA)
solar hot water rebate (VIC)
solar hot water rebate (WA)

solar electricity panel rebate (national)

The Photovoltaic Rebate Program (PVRP) is national program and is accessable to all Autralian home owners.  It is available for both grid connect solar systems and remote area power systems when installed on your primary place of residence.

The rebate is based on the peak photovoltaic output on a system and is calculated at $8/Watt.

The minimum system size is 450 Watt and the maximum is 1000 Watt. Hence the maximum rebate is $8,000.

In addition to the PVRP rebate, Renewable Energy Certificates for an initial fifteen year period can be claimed up front.

renewable energy certificates (national)

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are another stream of funding available for solar hot water, wind turbines and solar panels.

The bigger the renewable energy installation, the bigger the REC's is.

One REC symbolises 1MWh of electricity sourced from renewable energy. This generally represents one Tonne of abated greenhouse gas. One REC is like a "carbon credit".

We usually take the RECs amount off the invoice price whenever we install a solar hot water, grid connect solar or stand alone power systems for you.

The value of one REC changes on a daily basis. Over the last few years, it has been anywhere between $6 and $36 for one REC.

remote power rebate - western australia only

The Remote Area Power Supply (RAPS) Program provides rebates for the installation of remote power systems used instead of fossil fuel generation in off-grid areas of WA.

Rebates of 55% of the capital cost of eligible equipment and services are available, including:
Renewable energy generating equipment such as photovoltaic arrays and wind turbines
Other parts of the installation such as inverters, batteries and battery chargers
The design and insallation of the system

Rebates are available for complete systems and for additions to existing systems.

The maximum rebate available under the Remote Area Power Supply Program is $550,000.

grid connect rebate for fringe of grid - western australia only

The Rural Renewable Energy Program provides a 50% (ex GST) rebate for grid connect solar systems in specific 'fringe of grid' areas of the South West electricity grid or Western Australia.

For renewable energy power systems with a rated capacity of between 500W and 30kW, the program provides rebates of 50% of the capital cost of eligible systems, up to a maximum of $150,000.

Eligible equipment and services for a 50% rebate are:
Renewable energy generating equipment such as photovoltaic arrays and wind turbines
Other parts of the installation such as inverters, batteries and battery chargers
The design and insallation of the system

solar hot water rebate - south australia only

The South Australian Government provides a rebate up to $700 on the cost of a new solar hot water system.

These Systems Qualify For A Rebate
These Systems Do Not Qualify For A Rebate
1) solar hot water system (electric or gas boosted) that replaces the use of an electric hot water system
2) gas boosted solar hot water system replaces a gas hot water system
3) solar hot water system (electric or gas boosted) that is installed on a new home which does not have access to reticulated gas
4) a gas boosted solar hot water system that is installed on a new home that does have access to reticulated gas

1) electric boosted solar hot water system replaces an existing gas system
2) electric boosted solar hot water system is installed in a new home that has access to reticulated gas
3) rental properties, commercial, industrial, or business locations, public housing and holiday homes
4) heating a swimming pool etc
5) replacing any existing solar hot water system or components

Retrofit kits are eligible for a rebate when attached to an existing conventional electric water heater, if the existing hot water system is covered by warranty for at least another three years.

A two panel solar hot water system attracts a $700 rebate and a single panel system or a retro fit kit attracts $500.

In addition to the government rebate, Renewable Energy Certificates for the life of the solar hot water system can be claimed up front. For a two panel solar hot water system, this currently equates to around $1,000 dependent on the geographical location of the water heater.
