This
site started in the 1800s powered by candlelight. About forty years ago
a 32 Volt wind powered system was introduced providing electricity for
lights. For about the past 20 years, a three phase 42kVA diesel
generator has been running 24 hours a day providing power for lighting,
appliances, pumps, hot water, fridges, freezers etc...
The
renewable energy system installed by Solar Shop Australia incorporates
diesel, solar and wind power. The original Dunlite wind turbine was
restored and modified to 120Vdc and now contributes to powering
Balcanoona after having a 20 year break.
The
system incorporates two 20 foot shipping containers. One container
houses the generators and the other houses the battery bank and
inverter. The containers are both cooled by thermostatically controlled
air-conditioners. Shading is provided by the solar array and the
corrugated iron cladding.
Kaneka
thin film amorphous solar panels were selected by National Parks
&
Wildlife due to their exceptional high temperature performance and
environmental benefits compared to regular crystalline solar panels.
