Solar Pumps

Solar pumps are transforming the landscape of the Australian bush. Traditionally remote water pumping has been dominated by windmills or diesel engines. In recent years however pastoralists have discovered the unparalleled benefits of solar pumping.

Simply put, sunlight is converted into electricity using photovoltaic solar panels. The electricity produced powers the pump through a controller. The pump starts by itself every morning at sunrise and switches off at sunset automatically.

Solar Pumping Installation

There are no batteries in a solar pumping system, so the pump only works during daylight hours. If you are pumping into a tank, float switches can be installed to tell the pump to switch off when the tank is full. Sensors can also be installed to tell the pump to stop pumping if the water level in the bore or dam gets too low, thus protecting the pump.

Usually the purchase of a solar pump pays for itself the very day it is installed. Installing regular mains power can be an expensive business when trenching, cabling, resurfacing and ongoing power bills are taken into account. Some other benefits of solar pumping are:

- Environmentally friendly - no greenhouse gas emissions
- Maintenance free
- Provides maximum water in summer when it is needed most
- Long lasting
- Fully automatic in operation
- No noise
- More consistent daily flow compared to a windmill

Kyocera Logo

The Kyocera SD Series of submersible solar pumps are DC powered, diaphragm type positive displacement pumps designed for water delivery in remote locations.

Constructed of marine grade bronze and 304 stainless steel, these highly efficient pumps are designed to operate on 12 to 30 volts of direct current that may be supplied from solar panels and/or batteries.

Power requirements can be as little as 35 watts. They can be used to fill an open tank or in a pressurized water delivery system making them an ideal way to provide water for livestock, remote homes, campsites, small farms or any other need beyond the commercial power grid.
